Water Activities

Possum Kingdom is the perfect place to enjoy a day on the lake. Known for its clear, blue water, visitors will enjoy everything from swimming to fishing. Fun water activities include:


  • Fishing – from white crappie to different species of bass and catfish, the state park is a great place to fish. A fishing pier and cleaning station are both available, and no license is required when fishing from the shore within the park. 
  • Swimming – enjoy swimming in the beautiful blue water. Designated swimming areas help keep swimmers safe. Bring a picnic lunch to eat at one of the conveniently placed tables nearby.
  • Boating – whether you’re fishing, skiing, or just relaxing, Possum Kingdom State Park is the perfect place to enjoy all your favorite boating activities. Possum Kingdom boat rentals are available for a variety of watercraft.
  • Scuba diving and snorkeling – Possum Kingdom Reservoir is a popular scuba diving and snorkeling destination in Texas. The clear water and submerged rock formations make for great diving conditions.
  • Sunbathing – the lovely shoreline and comfortable Possum Kingdom weather provide a comfortable and scenic environment to catch some rays and enjoy sunbathing by the water.

Land Activities

If you’re taking a break from water activities, you’ll find many fun things to do on land

throughout the park such as:



  • Hiking – there are three hiking trails and 12 trailheads in Possum Kingdom that range from moderate to challenging. The longest hike is just over a mile while the shortest is less than half a mile. The trails take hikers through woodlands and prairies while winding past scenic outlooks and beautiful vistas.
  • Biking – park roads extend from the lakeshore to the limestone ridges of the state park and provide an excellent bike path through the local scenery. Rest areas with benches and information about the local vegetation and wildlife are also found along the trails.
  • Picnicking – enjoy a fun meal in a beautiful outdoor setting at one of the many picnic tables located throughout the park. Some have waterside views while others feature cooking grills, fire rings, and play areas for younger children to explore.
  • Geocaching – find hidden treasure throughout the park by participating in geocaching. Your search will take you through the beautiful woodlands and grasslands of the park and extend to the shoreline surrounding the clear blue water.
  • Cliff diving - Hell’s Gate at Possum Kingdom is a prime spot for cliff diving. At 90 feet tall, these cliffs provide a perfect place for diving into the deep water below. 
  • Visit the convenience store  - the store at the Breakers Marina has everything you need to keep you stocked on the lake or on the shore all day long. From snacks and drinks to boating and fishing supplies, this store has it all.

Places to Stay

Possum Kingdom Lake camping through the state park is the perfect way to extend your visit to the park with a few different options for overnight stays. Possum Kingdom camping gives you and your family a chance to relax, unwind, and enjoy the view of the beautiful night sky. 


  • Longhorn Lodge – the lodge can sleep up to eight people and features air conditioning and heating, electricity, bathroom with shower, refrigerator, oven and stove, water, and kitchen sink. However, bed and bathroom linens and cookware are not included, and guests must bring their own.
  • Cabins – the Possum Kingdom Lake cabins can sleep up to four people and offer the same amenities as the lodge with guests being required to bring their own bedding, towels, and cookware. Both the lodge and the cabins also feature outdoor grills and picnic tables.
  • Camping – campsites at Possum Kingdom Lake and State Park range from sites with electricity and water, to sites with only water, and even some primitive sites without electricity or water. Campsites with electricity and water or water only feature restrooms nearby and can sleep up to eight people. Primitive sites are located half a mile from the restrooms and can accommodate up to four people.
